Ferno Compact Carry Chair used for?

The Ferno Compact 1 Carry Chair is an essential tool for transferring patients over short distances, such as through corridors and lifts. This chair is particularly invaluable in scenarios where traditional evacuation methods are not feasible, like during emergencies when lifts are out of action. Its compact and narrow design does not compromise its robust build, making it ideal for use in confined spaces.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, buildings and businesses are required to provide safe evacuation options for everyone, including those who cannot use stairs, such as pregnant, disabled, or injured individuals. The Ferno Compact 1 Carry Chair addresses this need effectively. While evacuation chairs are suitable for stairways, the Compact 1's design is particularly advantageous for moving patients along narrow corridors or, when safe, even in lifts. Its adaptability and ease of manoeuvrability make it a perfect solution for these specific yet critical patient transfer needs.

How to Use the Ferno Compact 1 Carry Chair

Storing the Chair:

  • Folds down to a compact size for easy storage.
  • Safety rings ensure the chair remains safely folded.
  • The seat cover is easily wipeable for hygiene.

Daily Checks Before Use:

  • Ensure the chair is clean.
  • Inspect for any bent, damaged parts or missing fasteners.
  • Check that the wheels rotate freely without excess movement or damage.
  • Ensure the chair unfolds and locks securely in the seating position.
  • Inspect the upholstery for any damage and ensure it is correctly secured to the frame.
  • Contact a Service Engineer if you find any issues.

Unfolding and Folding the Chair:

  • Unfolding: Place the chair on the ground, lift the back up and rearward until you hear a click, indicating it's locked. Move the safety rings down over the hinge bracket.
  • Folding: Lift the safety rings, pull the release catch in the centre and fold the chair forwards. Restraints can be used to secure the chair in the folded position.

Using Restraints:

The chair is equipped with two restraints for patient comfort and safety. Always secure the patient with these restraints, assessing their condition for the best strapping procedure.

Additional Features (Compact 1-S only):

  • Folding Foot Rest: Pull to release plungers, lift the footrest into the folded position. To unfold, pull forwards and downwards, releasing the plungers.
  • Removable Head Pad: Attachable to the upper handle in the second or third position for patient comfort. Adjust the upper handle as needed for height variations.

General Principles of Operation:

  • Always inform the patient of your actions.
  • Follow good lifting procedures as specified in manual handling regulations and training manuals.
  • Ensure safe practices for both patient and operator.
  • Take extra care on uneven ground and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Always use patient restraints and stay with the patient at all times.

Rolling the Patient and Chair:

  • After securing the patient, the attendants should position themselves at the front and rear of the chair.
  • For the Compact and Compact 2, tilt the chair back to balance the weight on the wheels for rolling.
  • For the Compact 1-S, use the two wheels at the foot end for movement on level ground without tilting.

Carrying the Patient and Chair:

  • Use the “tilt/back and balance” procedure for carrying.
  • Attendants should grasp the front and rear handles and lift simultaneously, adhering to recommended lifting guidelines.
